The day after Tyler’s surgery, there was a sudden flurry of activity on the base in Alaska. Shenin and her unit were out on the front line, patrolling when there was a lot of people whooping and hollering. Gina’s phone rang, and she looked at Shenin apologetically.

“Get it,” Shenin said, “It might be someone telling us what’s going on.”

Gina answered the phone and listened, her eyes grew wide, and then she got tears in them, looking over at Shenin. When Gina hung up the phone, she looked almost faint.

“What is it?” Shenin asked, worried.

“They just announced it,” Gina said, looking shell shocked, shaking her head, as if denying what she was saying as she said it, “They’ve taken down Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

Shenin’s mouth dropped open in complete shock. “Oh my God…” Shenin said, tears coming to her eyes.

“It’s about fucking time,” said one of the guys in the unit.

“Got that right!” yelled someone else.

Gina and Shenin looked at each other, smiling through their tears.

It was a weekend of celebration at almost every Air Force base in the country and world. Gays that had been hiding for years could suddenly breathe. It was amazing!

“Gay pipe dream, huh?” Shenin said, smiling as she held the phone close to her ear.

“Guess it was a pretty good pipe,” Tyler said, tiredly. She’d been out of surgery for 18 hours, but was still feeling the effects of the anesthesia.

“It is such wonderful news,” Shenin said, smiling from ear to ear.

“It is,” Tyler agreed.

“I’m sorry, babe, I know you’re still in a fog, I’ll let you rest,” Shenin said, “I just had to make sure you’d heard.”

“Couldn’t miss it around here,” Tyler said, smiling.
